10 years running in Chris' memory
WILTON — Thursday is the 10th Chris Dailey Turkey Trot in Saratoga Springs. The 5K race that began with 300 grieving friends and family in Wilton has grown to nearly 3,000 runners and long surpassed the Dailey family's fundraising goals.
It is a bittersweet anniversary for Mark and Maria Dailey and their children, Laura Rose , 21, and Brendan, 14. The foundation they established — just weeks after 8-year-old Chris died of an illness the day after Thanksgiving 2001 — is a success. But it has also been 10 years since they last saw their son and brother.
The Daileys set out to build a gym at Gavin Park, a quarter-mile from their home, where Chris played youth sports. They broke ground in August 2005 on the Christopher Dailey Memorial Youth Gymnasium and opened it in March 2006.
They paid off the $689,000 mortgage in 2009 by pouring everything that came into the foundation and gifts made in Chris's memory into the bank.
"Every time I had money, I went to the bank," Maria Dailey said.
