As I've revealed in the past, the Stepp family's Christmas breakfast, sadly enough, usually consists of coffee and store-made pastries. This year, however, I have decided to make the pastries instead of buying them. These recipes can be made ahead of time and served with coffee, espresso, hot chocolate or warm milk.
The Swedish tea ring is a coffee cake-like pastry that many families enjoy on Christmas Eve and morning. The pastry itself is a lot like a cinnamon roll, but without the cinnamon. You can, however, add to the filling cinnamon, cardamom, almond paste, cream cheese or raisins. I am referring to the recipe below as a cheater's Swedish Tea Ring because we are cheating by using crescent roll dough. I find many people are intimidated by making yeast breads, and I can accept that only for this one breakfast occasion. The rest of the year I'm not so forgiving.
