- It takes about six hours to make a gingerbread house from start to finish, but not all in one day. The gingerbread dough must be refrigerated overnight before it is rolled out and baked. After the dough is baked, it is immediately cut out and allowed to cool. After all the pieces (except the roof) are decorated, they must sit overnight to dry. The next day, the house is assembled and final decorations are done.
- One recipe (each) of gingerbread and icing is enough to make one gingerbread house. Gingerbread house templates are available online; print and transfer to cardboard.
- As soon as the gingerbread comes out of the oven, lay the cardboard patterns on it and cut the pieces out with a small, serrated knife. If you wait too long, the gingerbread will cool and become brittle, making it too hard to cut.
- Cook prefers to use only cut edges (not the edges formed by the sides of the tray) in her gingerbread houses. She said that the 90-degree crisp cuts look and adhere better.
