VHS Culinary Academy students learn to make holiday candy
THE VILLAGES — How sweet the taste of chocolate candy is, especially when it’s made by hand.
VHS Culinary Academy students found that out firsthand Friday afternoon.
The smell of sweet, delectable chocolate filled the air Friday afternoon in the kitchen of the Buffalo Grill at The Villages High School.
There was a good reason for the tempting aroma: Several of the academy’s students were busy breaking up and melting white chocolate and milk chocolate bark to make their own holiday candy.
The class, taught by volunteer Marie Kandrack, had students melting Ghirardelli candy-making and dipping bars for the day’s projects.
Students moved from table to table, some rolling caramel in thin strips and making spirals around pretzel sticks before other students dipped the pretzels in the melted chocolate.
“Today, the kids are going to make chocolate covered Oreos, peppermint bark, bird’s nests, peanut butter cups and coconut haystacks,” Kandrack said. “Chef John Woods lets me come teach this class every couple of years and I love it.
