“That was a tough game,” Simpson said. “When I got to the program seven years ago, we never made FCIACs and only made states twice. To win three finals in five years and to make states every year is a credit to the effort these girls put in. It’s a fantastic thing.”

“We made a name for ourselves in the FCIAC and knew it last year when we beat Westhill in overtime for the championship,” GHS senior Shannon Colligan said. “This year we wanted to emulate last year’s team. I told the girls that last year was in the past. They won their trophy and now it’s time to win ours. The legacy that we’re leaving here is amazing.”

Against Fairfield Warde in the FCIAC finals, which was played at Fairfield Ludlowe High School, the Lady Cardinals started out strong, scoring with 18:07 to play in the opening half and holding on for that 1-0 victory.

“This is an amazing feeling,” said Hayden Stein, a senior at GHS. “To win it last year was one thing, but to have it two years in a row is great. It’s the most fun that we’ve ever had. This is something that I’m going to take with me for the rest of my life. I am so proud of all these girls for putting in the effort. We’re doing things like building off previous years and right now I am just really excited to go to states now.
