I’ve been following news reports about the current anti–Wall Street movement occupying various parks and public spaces with interest. I fondly remember the sense of purpose and solidarity — and the cute guys and enticing romantic possibilities — of the protest marches of my youth, and am enjoying watching a younger generation discover them.

I admire their dedication and persistence, but I feel no desire to camp out with them. I confess my own struggles have been more personal and less altruistic this month. At the moment, I’m concerned not with the 99 percent, but with the 68 percent. That’s the number of adult Americans who are considered to be overweight. I’m battling not to join their ranks.

Every morning for the past several weeks, I have started the day with resolve. Taking a tip from the Bush-era economy, I figure that if I spend calories with reckless abandon, I should be able to quickly place my body in a deficit situation that will start draining my reserves. I jump out of bed planning to expend far more calories than I take in.
